Metal fillings are obsolete. Amalgams (Tooth Colored Fillings) expand and contract when exposed to temperature changes. This movement weakens the tooth wall and can cause fractures. It also allows bacteria to enter and cause decay. Amalgam also contains mercury, a toxic element. Today’s tooth-colored composites area safer, stronger and more attractive than metal. Composites are more conservative restorations than metal, bonding directly to the tooth, requiring far less drilling of healthy tooth structure.
